Insurance

Insurance claims, translated into plain English.

Most homeowners file 1–2 roof claims in their lifetime. Here’s everything you wish you knew before the first one.

The 6-step claim process

1. Independent inspection
Before you call your carrier, get an independent roofer to document damage. This becomes your evidence if the adjuster misses something.
2. File the claim
Call the carrier and provide the date of loss and cause. You’ll get a claim number and an adjuster assignment within a few days.
3. Adjuster meeting
We meet the adjuster on your roof — this is legal in Texas and dramatically improves accuracy. We present our findings alongside theirs.
4. Scope of loss
The adjuster writes an estimate. This is a starting point, not a final answer. Supplements are normal and expected.
5. First check (ACV)
You receive the actual cash value payment upfront — replacement cost minus depreciation minus deductible.
6. Replacement & final check
After we complete the work, we file the final invoice and code updates. The recoverable depreciation is released to you.

The single most important rule

Never sign a contract with a roofer before the insurance decision. Some contractors will ask you to sign an “assignment of benefits” (AOB) or a contingent contract on day one. Don’t. In Texas, you have the legal right to control your claim and your contractor separately.

Watch out for storm chasers

After every major hail event, out-of-state contractors flood Central Texas. They knock doors, offer to “waive your deductible,” and disappear before warranty issues surface. That’s illegal — and you’re the one holding the bag.

Use a licensed, local, manufacturer-certified roofer. Every time.
